Zhongdian is the center of the mythical Shangri La, the promised land of everlasting bliss. It is the capital of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and lies at an elevation of 3,300 meters in the northwestern part of Yunnan. Within Zhongdian County, there are 470 snow-capped mountains with elevation higher than 4,000 meters. This beautiful land, known as "Shangri-La", is home for many ethnic minorities, all of whom have their own colorful and fascinating culture. Its unique geographical features jointly create a fascinating landscape where the mountains, deep valleys, grasslands, plateau lakes and rainforests harmoniously blend with the local ethnic folklore, making Zhongdian the place not to be missed in Yunnan. The most famous sights include Tiger Leaping Gorge and Songzanglin Temple. The annual Dragon Boat and Horse Racing Festivals are also quite popular.
