Lijiang is located on a plateau at an elevation of 2,400 meters in the northwestern part of Yunnan. It is surrounded by an array of impressive scenery and lush vegetation and possesses many fascinating sights. Visitors can see the formidable Jade Dragon Snow Range, the renowned grand canyon of Tiger Leaping Gorge, the Stone Drum village at the first bend of the Yangtze River, the unique Baoshan Xinzhu Botanical Garden and the Old Town of Lijiang. Lijiang is also the center of the Naxi people, a relatively small minority group with a richly textured culture. The Naxi people migrated to Lijiang long ago from northeastern part of Tibet. One characteristic that strikes the visitor is the predominance of Naxi women in all types of work. They are responsible for most of the heavy labor and fieldwork. They run the market and manage the family's money, while men take care of the garden, look after the children and maintain a musical tradition.
