Dali lies just three kilometers from the lakeshore of Erhai Lake, under the highest peak of the Cangshan Mountains, at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level. It is home for some 15,000 inhabitants and has historically been a seat of cultural and political power and has strong historical roots as the center of unique and vivid culture. Dali was the capital city of the fierce Nanzhao Kingdom, which was only defeated by the Mongols on their way to destroy Pagan in old Burma. Dali is the home of the Bai minority, one of Yunnan's most numerous and prosperous ethnic groups. Visitors to Dali are always deeply impressed by extraordinary sights such as the Three Pagodas, Nanzhao Stele, Snake Bone Pagoda and the well-known Dali marble quarries. It is no wonder that the Bai people consider Dali the best spot in China and never want to leave it.
