The Bell Tower
Originally from the 14th century, this huge tower was relocated in 1739. It is possible to climb to the top. The Bell and Drum towers were used to keep time for the town and sound alarms. Tuned bells date back to the sixth century B.C. They can be made of stone, brass, or bronze. Different shapes of bells were used over the centuries.

The Drum Tower
Standing in a very picturesque location on the west side of the center square of the city of Xi'an, the Drum Tower is only 150 metres away from the Bell Tower.

Built in 1380 the 13th year during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming, it occupies an area of 1,999 square meters and is 33 meters high. Upon completion, a huge drum was installed in the tower. When night fell, the drum was beaten to tell the hour. It is regarded as the sister tower of the Bell Tower, known together as Morning Bell and Evening Drum.
